Siemens HiMed Cockpit – Bedside Patient Terminal

In collaboration with Siemens HiMed, we are developing the next generation of the HiMed Cockpit – a multimedia terminal located directly at the patient's bedside. Our goal is to create an intuitive, accessible and human-centred user experience that supports all patient groups, regardless of age or individual limitations. The interface is deliberately focused on what matters most, helping to avoid overwhelming people who need rest and recovery. The ergonomic touchscreen provides patients with modern digital services directly at their bedside.

What the Cockpit Offers

Accessible Interface Design for Healthcare
The ergonomic touchscreen, complemented by physical hardware buttons, provides everything needed to make a hospital stay more comfortable:

  • Entertainment and communication services
  • Information on appointments, meals and important events
  • Service requests and assistance directly from the bedside

UX for Everyone: Focusing on Users with Diverse Needs

Our UX concepts are based on extensive user research and practical usability testing, including studies with older adults and people with physical or cognitive impairments. The HMI colour palette has been carefully selected to ensure that content remains clear and accessible for users with various visual impairments, including colour vision deficiencies.

Safety, Clarity and Ease of Use

Particular attention was paid to the following aspects:

  • Accessibility: including AAA-compliant contrast ratios, large font sizes and colour choices suitable for users with visual impairments
  • Clear UX writing: straightforward wording, direct language and terminology optimised for older user groups
  • Operational safety: large touch targets, ergonomic positioning and reduced content complexity for improved clarity
  • Friendliness and recognition: distinctive illustrations, customisable colours aligned with hospital branding and a welcoming tone of voice

Design That Provides Guidance and Reassurance

The new UI is designed to convey calmness and structure. A coloured ellipse in the background acts like a spotlight, subtly drawing attention to key actions and functions. This helps users make decisions quickly and confidently without feeling overwhelmed.

At the same time, the ellipse allows different screens to be distinguished at a glance, despite sharing a consistent visual style and layout grid. The result is a visual guidance system that improves orientation and simplifies interaction for all users. The dashboard is clearly structured and immediately highlights the most relevant information, including the current time, location and upcoming events. Key functions remain directly accessible at all times.
