UX/UI design for visionKit – smart quality assurance with a user-centred approach

The visionKit project focused not only on the product itself, but also on how good UX/UI design can make complex testing processes manageable, understandable and scalable. visionKit is software for AI-supported quality assurance – our task was to translate this technological capability into a clearly structured, efficient user interface.

The software made its first public appearance as part of a beta release at the VISION trade fair in October 2024. At that point, three pilot customers were already working with the system.

Initial situation: High complexity, many roles, critical decisions

Industrial quality assurance is characterised by:

  • Large amounts of data from camera systems
  • Different types of errors and evaluation criteria
  • Manual and AI-supported inspection decisions
  • Different user roles (quality assurance, development, analysis)

The central UX challenge was to map complex inspection logic in such a way that it could be operated safely, comprehensibly and efficiently – even when introducing new inspection processes.

UX goal: Make assessment processes visible, controllable and adaptive

Our UX concept for visionKit pursues three key goals:

  • Create transparency – users should understand at all times what is being assessed and how decisions are made.
  • Reduce complexity – through clear structures, recognisable patterns and visual hierarchies.
  • Support learning systems – by enabling manual assessments to be used specifically to improve AI-supported checks.

Key UX/UI features

Image-based error analysis with direct context:

  • Errors are marked directly in the camera image
  • Display of coordinates, error types and comments
  • Distinction between local and non-local errors
  • Clear visual feedback for quick decisions
  • The design supports intuitive and precise work – even with very small components such as screws or surface structures.

Process and mission management as a central interaction model

A core element of the UX concept is process management with missions as the central interaction model for inspection processes:

  • Missions bundle all relevant information for an inspection task
  • Products and image sources are clearly assigned
  • Error types define the scope of the inspection
  • Different agents (manual, AI-based) take on clearly defined roles

Different agents (manual, rule-based and AI-based) enable hybrid inspection processes, including decision-making logic and responsibilities. This turns an abstract inspection process into a visually understandable sequence.

Dashboard for quality assurance

The dashboard was developed specifically for quality assurance employees:

  • Direct access to error images and detailed views
  • Quick switching between overview and detail level
  • Support for data-based decisions

On the UX side, the focus was on orientation, prioritisation and quick comprehension of relevant information.

Our contribution: UX as part of the development process

CaderaDesign supported visionKit over a project period of around two years with a holistic UX approach:

  • UX/UI design for complex industrial software
  • Front-end-oriented conception for desktop applications
  • Requirements engineering from a user and process perspective
  • UX consulting & UX management for the integration of UX into development processes

A key objective was to view UX not as a downstream design step, but as a structuring element of product development.

Design system: consistency, scalability, adaptability

We developed a unique visual style for and with neogramm in advance:

  • Modular design system with component library
  • Colour theming based on customer-specific branding
  • Scalable UI for future functional enhancements
  • Optimised for desktop PCs, responsive

The result is a user interface that can grow with the product – without losing clarity or usability.
